Fourth UZH-BLCU Summer School in Chinese Language and LinguisticsStandard Chinese, Varieties, Language Change
June 12 - 23 2017, Beijing
The Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies, University of Zurich, and theCenter for Studies of Chinese as a Second Language, Beijing Language and Culture University, invite undergraduate and graduate students proficient in Chinese (HSK5) to participate in the FourthSummer School inStandard Chinese, Varieties, Language Changein Beijing.
About
The school provides the opportunity to attend lectureson major issuesaddressing various aspects of Modern Chinese languagecombined with practical training in related academic methods and skills. The four topicsto be discussedin this summer school areRhetorics, Adspeak and Branding, Puns and Other Figures of Speech, Cultural Revolution Speak. All teaching and training will be conducted in Chinese.
Schedule
There is one four-hour lecture each morning from Monday to Thursday. During the afternoons individual research is carried out on a chosen topic resultingin a scientific paper completed with the help of Chinese graduate students. On Friday, June 16, the participants present their work in progress followed by a discussion by the experts. There is a final exam on June 23.

Four leading experts have been invited to lecture on the four outlined topics:
Yuan Hui, College of Liberal Arts, Anhui University of China.Introduction to Rhetorics.
Yu Genyuan, College of Techniques of Broadcasting & Anchoring, Communication University of China,Adspeak and Branding.
Diao Yanbin, School of Chinese Language and Literature, Beijing Normal University,Culture Revolution Speak.
YangJianguo, Capital Interculture Studies, Beijing Language and Culture University,Puns and Other Figures of Speech
Organizers
The Summer School is jointly organized by the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies, University of Zurich, and the Center for Studies of Chinese as a Second Language, Beijing Language and Culture University.
Venue
The school takes place at Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing, China.
Housing
The participants are accommodated at the Conference Center ofthe campus of Beijing Language and Culture University.
Costs
A tuition fee of 4000 RMB will be charged for the two-week program. This figure does not include accommodation fees. Room (Single-bedroom for160 RMB/day)and board as well as travel and visa costs areat the expenses of the participants.

. Registration closes on May 15, 2017. You will receive a confirmation of your registration by e-mail and in due time an admission note of BLCU to apply for a short-term visa for China.Registration will be closed when the limit of 25 participants is reached.
