讲座提要:Recent years have witnessed increasing engagement with

the constructs of emotion and agency in applied linguistics research, and in

terms of their contribution to the complex dynamics of language learning. This

talk provides a critical analysis of the significance, challenges and prospects

of enquiry into emotion and agency in language learning through different

research tools with reference to two studies: the learning of Russian in study

abroad and in a distance telecollaborative exchange between learners of German

in New Zealand and learners of English in Germany. Data is presented showing

emotions as integral to students’ cognitive appraisals of tasks, the learning

environment and themselves, as well as to aspects of their individual agency

including their actions and decision-making in language learning. The talk

concludes with a discussion of the ways in which emotion and agency can be seen

as mutually constituted in the process of language learning, with emotion both

enabling and constraining agency, and agency shaping the dynamics of affectivity

within and across settings. Implications for theory, research and practice are

presented.
